Western Uganda Day 5

Chimp Tracking in Kyambura Gorge, QENP:
Today was the last day of my mini trip. And to finish it was another tracking excursion for some chimps. We left Mweya early to make it to the gorge by 8AM. Once we arrived, a UWA guide proceeded to take me into the gorge to find the chimps. This gorge stretched about 21km long and was a 100m drop to the bottom.

Unfortunately, this excursion did not turn out to be as good as I had hoped. First off, because we had to leave so early in the morning, I could not obtain any breakfast from the hostel. Then, the trek down the gorge was much more difficult than when I tracked the gorillas. So my energy level depleted rather quickly. It took us almost 2 hours to find the chimps. Once we did find them, we could not get close enough for me to get any pictures. These chimps were habituated, however, they very quickly moved around us to continue on their path. So, we began to follow them for a while. It ended up being a game for them, as we would follow to a distance by listening to their calls, then all of a sudden their calls would come from behind us. With all circumstances combined, we eventually gave up following them; I was too tired and we had a long drive back to Entebbe.

It was still nice to see the group in the wild, and I wish I could have gotten some photos, but what can you do. I, unlike doing gorilla tracking, would not do this again for what it was worth.

The rest of the day was spent driving back. We actually made really good time. Only leaving QENP around 10:30AM we got back into Entebbe around 7PM. I picked up my luggage and set myself up back in my banda for the evening.
